Race For Life, City of London, in aid of Cancer Research UK

By: Dianne Beer

Just five days to go…

….until the Cancer Research UK’s City of London Race for Life 2008 when Kathryn and I will be fun running around the city in aid of Cancer Research UK.

If you would like to come and cheer us along, we would love this! It is amazing how much a friendly face in the crowd cheering you on, especially at the half way mark, gives you a sudden extra burst of energy!

Date: Sunday 1st June 2008
Time: 11.00am (so you can even still have a lie in!)
Location: City of London, EC1A 9PQ
Contact details: You can reach me on 07747 800 740
(but don’t expect me to answer between 11.00am and 12.00pm when I will be either running or recovering!)

Kathryn and I always try to raise at least £100.00 per event between us, more if possible, for the race charity or one of our choice. We all have our own reasons for supporting certain charities and Cancer Research is one very close to my own heart, so I always enjoy running for ‘someone else’s life’ and raising money. If you would like to sponsor us please click here to visit our special sponsor page for this event.

Cancer research has set up a Donation Station. This allows you to bring along a bag full of items that you no longer need, which can then be sold in Cancer Research shops across the UK to help fund research. Nearly all the unwanted items that I have, I either hand in directly to my local Oxfam in Notting Hill on a Saturday morning or put them in the Giant Clothes Banks just off Portobello road, but I did a quick wardrobe ‘wrecky’ this Sunday and found some items I can happily part with before the moths come for dinner! You can put all sorts in these bags; clothes, bags, shoes, accessories, home ware, CDs and DVDs, so if you have stuff cluttering up your home bring it along when you come to support us and pop it in our Abenefit2u Donation Station bag. Cancer Research will get up to £8.00 for used mobile phone handsets! (but they do not accept chargers).

Thank you in anticipation for your support and for taking the time to read our Fun Run for Charity blog, we look forward to posting the photographs, telling you how we got on and how much we raised for charity on this occasion very soon…

The British 10K London Fun Run

By: Dianne Beer

How the years fly by…. It seems like only a few months ago Kathryn and I were taking part in this fun run, but it was in fact a year ago!

Despite cold weather and even a bit of rain last year (Never! Rain in England in June!) we really enjoyed this run, so we are really looking forward to doing it again this year. I have a sneaky suspicion this is also because after we had finished our run last year we attended the Marie Curie After Party hosted in a nearby hotel for all their charity runners. I have never lost and put on weight so quickly! I defiantly lost quite a few pounds during the race, but sadly put back double very quickly enjoying the buffet.

We are supporting the same charity again this year, one that, as you may know by now, is close to our heart; Marie Curie Cancer Care, the Daffodil Team!. It is a super cause and they are a very well organised charity who really do all they can to make if ‘fun for fundraisers’. The bright yellow daffodil vests are designed so that you can write your name on the front and back. This means all the daffodil supporters along the route are able to shout out your name and really encourage and spur you on to the end…

I am still not entirely convinced about running along with daffodil antennae on my head, so I may be telling Kathryn that they are too tight again this year! Either my age or vanity preventing me or both! Unless someone offers me a significant charity donation to wear them for the entire race?!

As you can see from the photo after last years race, Kathryn was brave enough to wear the offending articles!

If you would like to sponsor us for this race please click here to link to our special sponsorship page.

If you would like to come and support us on the day, this would be wonderful, and we will do our best to sneak you into the Daffodil After Party Sssssshhhhhhh!

Details:
Date: Sunday 6th July 2008
Time: 9.35 am start (no lie on this Sunday!)
Locations: Start: Hyde Park Corner. Finish: Buckingham Palace

Bill Turnbull (a presenter for BBC Breakfast since 2001) is a regular member of the Daffodil Team, first running for them in the BUPA Great North Run. Our mission is to try and find Bill Turnbull and get a photograph!

Marie Curie Cancer Care in partnership with Laura Ashley: Recycle your jewellery scheme

Marie Curie logo

Abenefit2u Fun Run staff have received ‘Recycle your unwanted jewellery’ envelopes from Marie Curie Cancer Care.

As this is their diamond anniversary year, they are asking supporters to help raise funds by donating jewellery they no longer wear or need. The donations will go towards more care for terminally ill patients. Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing, totally free, to give people with terminal cancer and other illnesses the choice of dying at home, supported by their families.

Abenefit2u staff have posted off their envelopes, not quite ‘laden with gold’ but a few valuables that will help towards a very good cause.

We thought we would post a blog on this recycling and fund raising idea in case any of our clients or candidates would like to do the same.

Postage free envelopes are available through www.mariecurie.org.uk

Or you can hand in your jewellery (with or without an envelope) to Laura Ashley stores or Marie Curie Care shops in their special collection boxes any time between May 1st through to July 31st 2008.

BT plant a tree scheme

Woodland Trust logo

Abenefit2u continue to strive towards a ‘paperless office’.

70% of our the bills and invoices are now paid on line and we are working hard on the other 30% of our suppliers…

We have just upgraded our phone systems this week and were delighted to discover BT’s online billing offer. When we sign up for their on-line paper free billing not only do we make a financial saving of £15.00 a year (and as you know Abenefit2u tries to use it’s end of year profit for good causes as well as ensuring happy employees and a healthy business) but BT will donate a tree for the Woodland Trust to plant on Abenefit2u’s behalf, and here at Abenefit2u we love nothing more than planting trees!

Abenefit2u Employee Charity Pledge…

Abenefit2u employees are always on the look out for other ways to raise money or donate to charity, from participating in fun runs throughout the year (for more on these please click here to visit our AB2U News Wall) to Charity Days in the Office (E.g. Jeans for Genes day, helping children with genetic disorders and Wear It Pink for breast cancer research.). Where funds allow we also made lump sum donations to any other special events, e.g. £50 – £100 purchase of charity raffle tickets, with any prizes being distributed equally to Abenefit2u employees.

Abenefit2u Company Charity Pledge…

Abenefit2u donate 1% of every placement fee to charity.

Therefore each time you utilise the services of Abenefit2u you will be helping to raise funds for charity.

The fees that we charge are not large but the numbers of clients that we deal with are, therefore we cannot donate individual amounts to each client’s favourite charity. Instead we collate all the charity names and hold a draw once a quarter. The winning charity will get a cheque for 1% of all the placements made over the previous 3 month period.

When you recruit your next new employee through Abenefit2u we will send you a Service Survey the day that they commence employment. This will ask you which charity you would like us to donate to on your behalf. If you are the lucky quarterly draw winner, an entire 3 months 1% of placement fees will go to your designated charity.
