Jeans for Genes Day, Friday 3rd October 2008

At last, a charity we don’t have to get hot and sweaty for! Well not on this occasion anyway. Just leap out of bed and jump into our jeans (hopefully with a shower in-between!) and raise £5.00 for Jeans for Genes Day, so Kathryn and I were delighted to support Jeans for Genes day on Friday 3rd October 2008, even if there are just the two of us in the office. As Tesco say “every little helps”.

Jeans for Genes day is an idea designed by the charity for children with genetic disorders www.jeansforgenes.com. It is a very simple idea to raise funds for a lovely charity. Just convince your employer to allow employees to wear jeans at work on the allotted day, and everyone that does donates an amount of the companies choice, usually between £2.00 – 5.00 to charity.

Kathryn and I were happy to donate £5.00 each and we have also been putting all our odd coppers into a collection box Jeans for Genes days sent us as part of their Jeans for Genes day fund raising pack. This arrived a couple of months ago, but it would seem most retailers now round their prices up to pounds these days, so our box is still not very full yet. We are not far off £5.00, so when we hit this mark I will donate five pounds online at our just giving page and stagger off to the bank and make the cashiers day, with my £5.00 bag of 1 and 2 pence coins!

Lifeboat Charity Donation

…thanking John Howe, from Professional Pensions Magazine, for his extremely generous donation to the RNLI, Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Having been in the recruitment industry for over fifteen years I have built up a lot of industry contacts in a host of areas, one of these being advertising and marketing. Over time there are publications that become favourites and people within the organisation that you thoroughly enjoy working with and know you can have a joke and banter, no matter what stresses the rest of the day contains.

Professional Pensions is one such publication with a large team of staff, each with different areas of responsibility. My role involves liaison with:

Len I only tend to see at Professional Functions, in particular Award Ceremonies. I only see Bill at Award ceremonies but hope to rectify that with either a game of golf or invite to our next company barbeque. John however is my main contact on a weekly basis for Recruitment Advertising both paper and web based.

John is a smashing character, always happy and loaded with a great sporting tip! A few weeks ago John was recounting a weekend of good fortune and his future forecasts when he made an extremely generous offer. He promised that if his forecast for the UEFA Cup Final came true he would donate 25% of his reward to any charity Abenefit2u named.

If you can imagine my delight at this offer, imagine my double delight when John won! True to his word he called me yesterday to find out which charity I would like a £60.00 cheque written to. As fate would have it, when I opened the post that morning a request from the RNLI, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, for donations was amongst them. I had filed it in our charity box for the future, because they were asking for direct donations, not for people to take part in events to raise funds, which is how Abenefit2u normally raise money.

John’s cheque arrived today and before I started this blog I popped it the RNLI FREEPOST envelope ready for posting, so John, on behalf of Abenefit2u and the RNLI an ENORMOUS THANK YOU!

Drop Everything! You’ve got 10 minutes to launch a lifeboat…
…You’ve just received a call telling you that you’ve got barely 10 minutes to launch a lifeboat to save someone’s life. The conditions are harsh and the clock is ticking. You need to stop whatever you’re doing and get moving now.
This is what it means to be a lifeboat crew member. Every day is spent waiting for the call, knowing you’ll have to put down your shopping, turn off the over, or walk out of a meeting, and be ready to launch in 10 minutes. Thankfully we are always ready; Last year we rescued an average of 21 people each day.
But saving lives isn’t cheap. It costs over £335,000 per day to run a 24-hour lifesaving service from over 230 stations around our coasts. Each launch costs thousands of pounds, even though our volunteer crews do it without monetary reward. They all have their own jobs, but they’re happy to volunteer their precious time and, possibly, their lives. Could you volunteer just £20 to help?

A donation of £20 will keep one of our lifeboats running at full speed for 10 minutes. That, on a rescue, might be the difference between life and death for someone, freezing to death in icy waters.

Postage Stamp Collecting for Charity – RNIB

I was prompted to write a blog page about the fact that Abenefit2u collect postage stamps for charity by my wonderful mother. As I was just about to return to London this evening, after spending Fathers Day in sunny Essex with all my family, my mother handed me lots of little bags each with different items I have asked my family to collect for charity, one of which are postage stamps for the Royal National Institute of the Blind.

I am now back home and have sorted through all the stamps to put them into two piles for storage until the end of the year, as Christmas is always a nice time to review all our charity work and send in our collections. Unless of course we fill the boxes before this…

If you also think this is a nice idea and would like to collect postage stamps here are the instructions on how the RNIB like to receive stamps:

  • Please leave approximately ½ to 1cm of envelope bordering each stamp. The rest of the envelope can be discarded (which will make it cheaper to send).
  • Please note that if stamps have too much excess paper agents will not buy the stamps.
  • Please do not remove the stamp off the envelope as they are damaged more easily.
  • Please separate the stamps into three categories:
    1) British
    2) Pre-decimal
    3) Foreign (anything outside mainland Britain is classed as overseas)
  • The stamps do not have to be sorted into individual countries or prices etc
  • The value of a stamp does not matter, so 1p stamps can be grouped together with £1 stamps.
  • Collected stamps should be sent to:

Stamps
Stamps are sorted by volunteers and then sold to dealers or collectors. They are mostly sold by weight, but if the RNIB can identify any valuable stamps they can be sold for a higher price. As a general guideline RNIB can expect to receive approximately £3 a kilo for UK stamps and approximately £10 – £15 a kilo for foreign stamps.

The following letter was sent to Abenefit2u by a RNIB Volunteer:

Dear Friends,

I am writing to say thank you for helping us in our fundraising efforts by helping us collect as many stamps as possible. Any amount large or small is much appreciated. I can assure you that every stamp you send, British or Foreign will help raise money for the Royal National Institute of Blind People. Stamps cut out and sorted correctly can be sent directly to my buyer to RNIB, PO Box 6198, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 9XT to save my loft space and we raise more money this way.

Please could you ask your family and other contacts to save their stamps for us and please remind them that they should they have approximately ½ – 1cm of envelope surrounding the stamp to prevent damage, but don’t panic if this isn’t possible and have the back of the envelope removed as well. (Works out cheaper to send as well). Please note that if stamps have too much excess paper our agent will not buy our stamps. Stamps should be separated into three categories, British, pre-decimal and foreign. Anything outside mainland Britain is classed as overseas. The stamps do not have to be sorted into individual countries or prices etc. PLEASE DO NOT remove the stamp off the envelope as they are damaged easily if they are.

We raise approximately £3 a kilo for UK stamps and approximately £10 – £15 a kilo for foreign stamps. We have managed to raise £5,511 in the tax year 2007-2008 and would love to reach a new target of at least £6,500 by the end of March 2009.

We are desperate for more contacts to send us their stamps in Great Britain and overseas so please spread the word of our appeal to anyone and everyone. We cannot provide over sixty services to blind and partially sighted children and adults without your support. I can also send details onto anyone via email. Remember this is an ongoing appeal and so stamps can be delivered at anytime of the year, whenever it suits you. Please contact me if you wish to have any questions or need stamp appeal posters or small leaflets for Christmas cards etc about our appeal.

If, like us, most of the post that you receive does not have a postage stamp (since many organisations use a franking machine) and you are therefore unlikely to collect a large amount of stamps yourself each year, then we would be delighted to forward them on for you if you wish to send us your used postage stamps. Abenefit2u will then send a large box containing all the stamps at the end of the year, as all the small collections soon add up…

The RNIB managed to raise £5,511 in the tax year 2007-2008 and would love to reach a new target of at least £6,500 by the end of March 2009.

For every £1 raised, the RNIB spends 84p directly helping blind and partially sighted people, 14p on raising more vital funds and 2p on administration.

Abenefit2u Employee Charity Pledge…

Abenefit2u employees are always on the look out for other ways to raise money or donate to charity, from participating in fun runs throughout the year (for more on these please click here to visit our AB2U News Wall) to Charity Days in the Office (E.g. Jeans for Genes day, helping children with genetic disorders and Wear It Pink for breast cancer research.). Where funds allow we also made lump sum donations to any other special events, e.g. £50 – £100 purchase of charity raffle tickets, with any prizes being distributed equally to Abenefit2u employees.

Abenefit2u Company Charity Pledge…

Abenefit2u donate 1% of every placement fee to charity.

Therefore each time you utilise the services of Abenefit2u you will be helping to raise funds for charity.

The fees that we charge are not large but the numbers of clients that we deal with are, therefore we cannot donate individual amounts to each client’s favourite charity. Instead we collate all the charity names and hold a draw once a quarter. The winning charity will get a cheque for 1% of all the placements made over the previous 3 month period.

When you recruit your next new employee through Abenefit2u we will send you a Service Survey the day that they commence employment. This will ask you which charity you would like us to donate to on your behalf. If you are the lucky quarterly draw winner, an entire 3 months 1% of placement fees will go to your designated charity.
